Meet Judge Sonia Rash

Judge Sonia Rash, a Fort Bend County resident for 17 years, took office as Justice of the Peace for Precinct 3 on January 1, 2023, bringing over two decades of legal experience and a lifelong commitment to serving the public. Raised in Houston by working-class parents, she has championed the underserved through court advocacy, free legal clinics, and grassroots efforts, earning a bachelor's degree in political science,  a master’s degree in international relations/economics, and a law degree from Texas Southern University. Beyond the bench, she has been recognized for her volunteerism and leadership roles in LULAC, the NAACP, and S.M.I.L.E. Since taking office, Judge Rash has prioritized justice, fairness, and accessibility by introducing night court for working families, offering free community programs, and creating a resource hub for legal and non-legal needs—breaking down barriers to justice and fostering dignity, respect, and hope in her courtroom.

PIONEERING JUSTICE FOR ALL

NIGHT COURT FOR WORKING FAMILIES

Many working individuals face the difficult choice between attending court and keeping their jobs. To address this, Judge Sonia Rash implemented Night Court sessions—offering extended evening hours for court proceedings. Judge Rash has become the first and only Justice of the Peace in her county to create a night court designed to serve working families. This helps to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to resolve legal matters without sacrificing their income, job security, or family responsibilities. In doing so, she has made the court system more inclusive and humane, aligning it more closely with the needs of the public it serves.

ELIMIATE CASE BACKLOGS

Through efficient case management, innovative scheduling, and a dedicated team effort, I successfully eliminated case backlogs in our court-ensuring that justice moves swiftly and fairly for everyone. By streamling court processes, expanding access through night court sessions, and using technology to improve efficiency, we have transformed delays into timely resolutions. This achievement reflects my commitment to fairness, accountability and ensuring that every case, no matter how big or small, receives the prompt attention it deserves.

CONVENIENT VIDEO CONFERENCE HEARINGS

To make the justice system more accessible, after taking office Judge Sonia Rash began offering video conference hearings as a standard option. This has allowed individuals to attend court without the burden of taking time off work, arranging childcare, or traveling long distances. With this approach, justice becomes more efficient, flexible, and inclusive—especially for those with limited resources or mobility. This has proven indispensable for those caring for young children, elderly relatives, those with physical disabilities, and individuals who simply cannot afford to miss work.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH SEMINARS WILLS & PROBATE, KNOW YOUR RIGHTS, PATHWAY TO CITIZENSHIP, SEALING RECORDS, ETC.

Knowledge is power, especially when it comes to understanding your legal rights. After taking office, Sonia organized regular community seminars focused on practical legal topics for all Fort Bend Citizens. These free events provided residents with valuable tools and information to better protect themselves, their families, and their futures—while building stronger trust between the court and the community.

INTERNSHIPS FOR COLLEGE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

I am proud to provide internship opportunities for both high school and college students, giving young people a chance to gain firsthand experience in the justice system and public service. These experiences allow young people to learn, grow, and see firsthand how public service impacts our community. Guiding students on their journey not only strengthens their confidence but also inspires them to become future leaders.

WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS

Expanding Accessible and Flexible Court Operations

Expand Night Court Options – Judge Sonia Rash is committed to making courts more accessible and responsive. She will advocate for more flexible scheduling, language access, and community-focused solutions to ensure justice works for everyone. Judge Rash is committed to adding more evening dockets so working families and small business owners have greater access to justice outside of regular working hours.

Additional Virtual Hearings and Evening Sessions

Sonia Rash supports offering virtual hearings and evening court sessions to better serve working families and increase access to justice for all. Virtual Hearings & Services – Continue building out online platforms so citizens can attend hearings, file documents, or access resources remotely and conveniently. Fee Community Mediation Programs- Develop alternatives to formal hearings, such as mediation sessions, to help resolve disputes quickly and fairly.

EMPOWERING STUDENTS THROUGH MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT

S A student’s well-being is the foundation of their success. That’s why I plan to collaborate with mental health organizations to provide the tools and guidance our students need to overcome life’s challenges. When we address mental health, we’re not just helping students in the moment, we are empowering them to success in school and in life.

TRUANCY PREVENTION INITIATIVES

Partnering with schools to address absenteeism through counseling, community involvement and peer discussions, not punishment.

Court in the Community

Host informational sessions in local libraries, community centers, or schools to make the justice system less intimidating and providing education as to the workings of the Justice of the Peace.

LEGAL RESOURCE CORNER

Create a public area in the courthouse with brochures and links to self-help forms and community resources. In addition to partnering with local bar associations or legal aid to provide indigent citizens a resource.

Youth Engagement

Sonia Rash will grow the high school and college internship program and create a “Youth in Justice” day where students can shadow court proceedings.

Language Access

Expand translation services to ensure all residents feel represented and understood.
